Description;

A rather ornate and attractive, oriental brassbound Writing Slope. Made to order in ca. 1820-40, the place of origin is Malacca in the former Dutch East Indies; now Indonesia. Formerly a bespoke piece of furniture, originally made for a Trading Merchant. This particular object; besides being made with ivory finials, exotic woods such as Amboina, Mahogany, Indian Rosewood and Satinwood, it is also finished on the outside with a rather ornate brass inlay showing foliage patterns. The inside has in addition, a fully fitted interior with a gilt and tooled Bordeaux leather working surface (please zoom to get the best views). The in the interior is also a very practical, in having a connected secret compartment for valuables.

In addition to having these nice touches it is fully equipped for arranging ones private correspondence, bills, receipts, all of the in and outgoing memo’s, pens, ink, document stamps and seals and storing photographs etc. The top is furnished with a book and document holder, made of ebony. The top can be tilted in to varying angles which allows the owner to read any kinds of documents at greatest ease, being either seated or standing.

Once on a journey at sea, placed on a table it also served as a music stand for a orchestra conductor; the slope had all of the corrected partitures for a concert were locked safely away inside the object. When not in use it can be folded up, locked and closed. As a piece of furniture on display, it is exceedingly beautiful with a very lively, but pleasant patina indeed.

Condition; The condition is excellent, with no constructive faults or restorations. Everything opens, turns and fits perfectly. This rather astounding piece of furniture is tuned to the finest details. Such an object besides being very attractive and esthetically pleasing, is also very functional in use, even today.

Combined with a lap top or notebook, either at home or place of work it still has relevance in getting organized, keeping check on debits and credits and other personal mail, thus making life a bit easier. An ideal companion and talking piece. While a electronic notebook might only last for a few years, this Oriental organizer will keep on going pretty much indefinitely.
