A watercolor painting of Venice done in 1912, and signed Kossjakoff. He was the interesting and extravagant Russian artist, Georgij Antonowitsch Kossjakoff ( 1872 -1914).
This tranquil evening scene of the canal near the vegetable market, just behind the Medieval Jewish Merchants Quarter by the Ponte Nuovo.
Kossjakoff uses very impressionistic, bold washes of ochre yellow to capture the magic quiet; when the bustling city winds down. At last, all the bars and restaurants have all closed their shutters and blinds, before falling asleep.
A fleeting figure under a milky colored moon, hurries homeward across the bridge and cobblestone paving; and onwards, past the sleeping wherries and gondolas who gently nudge the quay sides. Indeed, Kossjakoff has expertly captured the haunting theme of modern gas lighting and radiating streetlamps together with star filled skies.
Such scenes of Venice as the eternal city, have also inspired other artists, for example; some of the street scenes at night, in the 1971 Visconti’s film of “Death in Venice.“
