A Bakelite coffee grinder from the Art Deco period ca. 1922-1928.
This particular coffee grinder in question, was made in the early 1920’s from a material called Bakelite, by the German designer called PeDe (Peter Dienes). Bakelite was named after its famous Flemish inventor; Leo Baekeland around 1907 -09.
In its heyday, the Bakelite resin compound became legendary as “The very Latest” high- tech futuristic very chic, material to have around the home and office.
Manufacturers developed Bakelite into many different colors and variations in the uses, ranging from the more simple household equipment such as ash trays, telephones, light switches, to gramophone and radio housing, or even jewelry and imitation tortoiseshell.
More adventurous uses found their ways into the various molding’s in car interior’s; not even to mention the many applications on the great luxury Trans - Atlantic liners of the period. Suddenly; the logo on a normally straightforward piece of 1920s designer - utilitarian ware, takes on quite a different dimension and becomes even more interesting.
