Description;

An antique pocket or travelers globe in a domed “Lignum Vitae” domino turned box, with paper gores. This object is dating from the 2nd half, of the 19th century.

The maker of this licensed Dutch language version of the map of the world, (De Aarde, Uitgave van Abel Klinger) is by A. Klinger of Nuremberg. On the south pole gores is printed “Wilkes Ldn” or Wilkes of London, England. This colored globe shows the world as it was then, being very useful when either planning or making a journey. One could hold the whole world in one hand, enclosed in a small “Lignum Vitae” nutshell so to speak.

Whether the object was to gauge the distances, or favorable trade winds for the 19th century tea clippers between Europe and China, how to get to Cape Town in South Africa, or as the map shows; how to reach a country the Dutch at one time named New Holland (nowadays called Australia). Such a globe gave empowerment to the owner, in order plan any travels, to judge the prevailing winds for any nautical journeys or overland trips.

A small, highly transportable object, such a resource would help the busy owner; (running on the hoof so to speak) to manage an ever changing world; in a time of a fading sailing fleets on the high seas, and the up and coming of the far more powerful steam engines for transport across both land and seas.

Condition; The general conditionof both globe and “Lignum Vitae” box, is good. All the colors are pretty fresh, however, it has been used for the made purpose. The globe is therefore not pristine, nonetheless, all the printed texts, colors and lines on the paper gores, are quite legible. It has not been exposed to direct sunlight, for any longer periods. A very interesting object to have in a collection. The centimeter size is ca, Globe diameter; 4.2. Base diameter of box; 7.2 Box height; 6.4
