Description;

A polychrome antique Delftware charger, made in Delft ca. 1700-40. A rather delightful example, of the European passion for the “Chinoiserie” lifestyle, and everything alien from the Orient. This is a very good example of the Delft potteries quite outrageously copying, or perhaps emulating is a better word; the exotically flavored Orient.

The colors and décor are purely loaned from the Oriental Porcelain which was being imported into Europe. One should however, not forget that it was a time of complete European barking madness; for practically anything with an Oriental flavor. Take for example the drinking of tea, coffee and chocolate. The wailing laments of 18th century urban housewives, who complained bitterly about spouses who preferred to sit gossiping and drinking gallons of coffee in sometimes very dubious establishments, which had all sprung up like mushrooms overnight.

Many metropolitan ladies firmly believed, that the over indulgence in coffee by the men, was the main cause of impotency, lack of affection in the home and very much to their dissatisfaction.

Condition; This particular charger is in reasonably good condition, the front edges shows signs of wear to the glaze, but the polychrome decor is in very good order. The back is also in good state. The spur marks from the 3 separation nails used during firing, have at the back edge, left a good visible scarring. A nice collectable example, of a very fashionable trend setter from the 18th century. The centimeter size is ca, The base diameter; 19.0 Height; 5.4 Rim diameter; 34.0
